Today, as many mark three years since October 7, I hold every life lost in grief. Grief is not a competition, and no one’s mourning makes another’s less real.
But remembrance that stops at one people is incomplete.
For three years, Palestinians in Gaza have lived through bombardment, starvation and displacement on a scale the world has watched in real time. Tens of thousands have been killed, most of them women and children. Whole families have been erased from the civil registry. Hospitals, schools, universities, mosques and churches lie in ruins. Leading human rights organizations, genocide scholars and a United Nations commission of inquiry have named what is happening for what it is: genocide.
This did not begin three years ago. In 1948, more than 750,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes in the Nakba, the catastrophe. Many still hold the keys to houses they were never allowed to return to. Their children and grandchildren have lived as refugees, under occupation and siege, for generations. The Nakba is not only history; for Palestinians it has never ended.
Today I honour the Palestinian people: their dignity, their steadfastness, their right to live freely and safely on their land, and their right to return.
Every life is sacred. Justice cannot be partial. Peace will only come when Palestinian lives are counted, mourned and protected with the same care as every other life.
Free Palestine.
