Doug Ford must keep his hands off Toronto

He imposed strong-mayor powers that let a mayor pass bylaws with just one-third of Council. He is pushing a private spa onto our public waterfront at Ontario Place. Now he is taking ownership of the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway. Toronto’s roads, waterfront and decisions belong to the people who live here, not to Queen’s Park.
And Olivia Chow opened the door.
Mayor Chow now says the Premier must stop interfering. But in November 2023, she stood beside Doug Ford, thanked him for a “wonderful partnership,” and handed him the Gardiner and the DVP. In the same deal, the City stepped aside on Ontario Place, the public waterfront Chow had promised to protect.
Doug Ford isn’t her opponent. He’s her best friend. In 2023 he called her election an “unmitigated disaster.” This September, he said they have a “phenomenal relationship,” that she’s doing “an incredible job,” and told reporters to “read between the lines.” In April, he even said, “I love you, mayor.”
As an engineer, I know a simple rule: whoever owns the infrastructure controls its future. Decisions about Toronto’s two main highways, from tolls to closures to what gets built around them, will now be made at Queen’s Park.
Chow warns that her opponent sides with Ford. By her own record, she is on the same team. One gave Ford the bike lanes. The other gave him the Gardiner, the DVP and Ontario Place.
You cannot ask the architect of a problem to solve it.
Toronto needs a mayor who stands up to any premier, protects what belongs to this city, and answers only to the people who live here.
